Norman Hardie Riesling 2015

May
01

Consistently great Riesling in the perfect off-dry style. Strikes the perfect balance of sugar, acid, alcohol, and lime flavour. The rich texture and long finish might make you think the wine is sweeter than it actually is, but there’s no cloying sugar on the tongue. (4.5/5)

Trail Estate Chardonnay Musqué 2015

Trail Estate Chardonnay MusquéBeautifully perfumed nose with rich tropical fruit and floral notes. The palate is surprisingly textured with some body from neutral oak aging, and flavours reminiscent of Viognier. Wines like these are a great compromise for the oaky Chard and aromatic white drinkers.  (4/5)

Angel’s Gate Pinot Gris 2015

Feb

This wine saw some neutral oak barrels, giving it a pretty golden straw colour. I love the complexity of the nose, with beautiful notes of honey, mushroom, and stewed apple. The palate doesn’t live up to the aromas, and there isn’t enough flavour to balance out the dry, slightly tannic mouthfeel. (3.5/5)

Trail Estate Baco Nouveau 2016

Feb

A purple hue and concord grape aroma announce the juicy, jam flavour of this Baco Noir. The tightly wound acidity and concentrated flavours make for a wine that drinks like a mouthful of fresh berries. The most refreshing Baco Noir you will ever taste, with a here-and-gone finish that’s perfect for non-red drinkers to ease into the style. (4/5)

Nickel Brook Head Stock India Pale Ale

There’s a great balance of fruity, hopped flavour and rich malt. This beer reminds me of another craft beer I had years ago when I first getting into microbrews and it definitely has a nostalgic element for me. Love it. (4.5/5)

Trail Estate Hughes Vineyard Riesling 2015

trail-estate-rieslingThis wild-ferment Riesling has a pretty, perfumed nose of lemon and sweet orange. It’s off-dry, but has plenty of minerality and tart acid to balance it out. The restrained palate of candied lime makes it a great apertif, with a clean finish leaving you thirsty for more. (4/5)

MacKinnon Brothers Wild Peppermint Stout

Nov

This isn’t a gimmicky “Christmas” peppermint. There’s no sweet, artifical mint aroma. The chocolate malt flavour of the stout is balanced with a refreshing hit of well-integrated peppermint that enhances, not overpowers. (4/5)
